Apple Addresses the iPhone 5 Purple Lens Flare Issue

It was a little bit of a surprise when
the iPhone 5 launched without an improved camera, but even more
surprising is the change that did come. Thanks to the new smaller
sensor, the new Safire lens cover or any number of other reasons,
some light flares in the iPhone 5 end up purple.

Apple has come out with an official
statement on the issue which, while true, avoids the main issue
completely.

“Most small cameras, including
those in every generation of iPhone, may exhibit some form of flare
at the edge of the frame when capturing an image with out-of-scene
light sources,” says the troubleshooting entry. “Moving the
camera slightly to change the position at which the bright light is
entering the lens, or shielding the lens with your hand, should
minimize or eliminate the effect.”

Of course, that only speaks to the
concerns about the lens flare itself, and not to the actual problem
of the flare being purple.
