It’s fascinating to take a look at how a pro photographer packs for a trip or what a seasoned travel photographer decides to bring when packing light, but this steps it up to a whole new level.
The folks over at PopPhoto caught site of a very cool self portrait by astronaut Mike Fossum and they just had to know more. They asked NASA a few questions and got some very informative answers back.
For example, the camera used in the shoot isn’t actually that different from the ones used by everyone else. NASA says that the D2X that they use is essentially just a standard camera with a minor firmware modification. Sometimes cameras have lubricant modifications, but that’s about it.
It’s also interesting to note that much of the time, a camera can only take one space flight. It’s not the rough and tumble launch or reentry, but the radiation that damages the cameras.
