Any good tips for using a digital camera?

I just bought a fuji s700, 7.1 megapixel camera with 10x optical zoom. For now I will use it in "automatic" mode, but does anyone have suggestions or definitions of standard features on all cameras. I should get it in the mail this week, and I need to become familiar with it for vacation in October.
