A huge percentage of Americans now walk around with a camera in their pocket thanks to the popularity of cell phones. Many of those phones even have decent cameras – not amazing, but enough to get the job done.
Increasingly, as massive events like Occupy L.A. occur, it’s citizens on the ground that are reporting the news through Twitter and providing pictures of the event uploaded directly from their cell phones. That near-instant coverage means that by the time a professional photographer can snap photos and upload them, plenty of people have already beating them to the bunch.
CNN has taken this as a sign that it’s time to eliminate some photojournalists from its roster. CNN laid off a total of 50 employees, though the amount of photojournalists let go hasn’t been specified.
